Emergency Asthma relief
This happens more often than people would like but there are times when you have an attack and you are with friends. It is very important to tell the people you are with what they can do in order to help you if you experience an asthma attack. The first thing you need to do is to remain calm. In many instances the person who has asthma can handle the attack themselves but in the circumstances that you need help you need to school the person you are with. If you notice your friend having a bad attack remain calm, sit the person down and reassure them you have the situation handled it will help keep them calm as well.
The next thing you need to do is to get them their inhaler as quick as possible, shake the inhaler and then give 4 separate puffs. Only do one puff at a time and ask the patient to take 4 breathes from the inhaler after each puff. Always try to use the person’s inhaler but if that is not possible then use the trial inhaler or someone else’s if accessible. Then wait about 4 or 5 minutes, you should see an improvement and if you don’t then try the inhaler again.
If there is still no improvement then call an ambulance. Dial 911 for an ambulance and make sure you tell them the person is having an asthma attack and you tried the inhaler and it did not work. In the meantime, keep trying the inhaler until the ambulance comes. Keep reassuring the person having the attack that you have everything under control. Keep them informed every step of the way, if they know what is going on then they won’t panic.
