The relievers are also airway openers, As soon as they are taken they immediately open the air passages to allow the sufferer to breathe. The relievers act as a relaxer for the muscles that surround the airways. Most common treatments for relievers are Salmeterol and Terbutaline. These medications are fast acting and clear the airways in no time. In an asthma attack time is very important, if not vital that you get the proper medication as quickly as possible.

Combination medications or inhaler for asthma

Then you have what doctors call combination medications. These are medications that has a controller medication as well as a reliever in one inhaler. Depending on each specific case one inhaler may have more relievers and less controllers and others may have the opposite. Anti Inflammatory medications are very important to asthma patients because asthma is essentially caused by the inflammation of the airways that prevent the right amount of air getting through to the lungs. While working in conjunction with airway opener medications it relieves the symptoms as well as allows air to pass through.

Steroids for Asthma

In addition to these medications, doctors may prescribe steroids, one common steroid is called Glucocorticosteriods. These are known as corticosteroids and they fall under anti inflammatory medicines but they are steroids. These are inhaled as well in order to get the maximum benefit and to get quick relief. There are steroids that are not inhaled such as prednisolone and prednisone. They can come in tablets or they can be injected. The people who are newly diagnosed with asthma sometimes mistakenly believe if they feel better then they should not take the medication but that is not recommended.
