How to handle Asthma Attack

What to do in case of an Asthma Attack?

Unless you have had them before you will know how to recognize an attack. It is also important for family members and friends to recognize an attack so that they can help you. What happens during an attack is that you will start to wheeze, wheezing is a good indicator at where you are in the throws of an attack. As long as you or the person having the attack is wheezing the bronchioles are not yet closed. You want to take action right away because once the bronchioles become blocked completely it can lead to a serious problem.

The person will cough and continue to cough throughout the attack, in the middle of coughing you will have a very rapid breathing pattern. Then will come the onset of tightened neck and chest muscles. The asthmatic will soon have trouble speaking and the onset of anxiety will set in. If you are the person watching this, you cannot let the attack progress this far. In the case that the asthmatic cannot speak they cannot tell you what is happening to them and then you may panic. So if they show signs of an attack coming on, here is what you need to do. Find someplace to sit , if you are driving immediately pull over.

Then take the inhaler from the person and shake it 4 or 5 times and have the asthmatic inhale the medications, puff the inhaler 4 times and wait 4 minutes. If they can breathe again wait a few minutes before resuming any activity. If that did not work do it again. If that still did not work, remain calm at all times and call an ambulance. Don’t panic, by you panicking then the asthmatic will panic and you won’t be able to handle the situation.
